Detail: Before Edward I, Court of Common Pleas heard common law cases at Westminster. Court of the King's Bench {king's court} heard civil and criminal cases. Court of the Barons of the Exchequer heard cases about king's finances. In shires, knights appointed by king, called Conservators of the Peace, presided over national courts.
